Plating a broken leg

Bungy was a 5 week old racing greyhound when he was presented to the Newtown Veterinary Clinic with a broken leg.

His mother had jumped on him and broken his tibia.

An xray was taken and the type and grading
of the fracture was assessed.

It was decided that placing a metal plate with screws across the fracture site would be the most appropriate method of fixation, keeping in mind the fact that keeping such a young animal quiet would be an almost impossible task!

Bungy was placed under general anaesthetic for his proceedure.

The plate was fixed down the lateral side of his tibia and four screws placed to keep the plate stable.

Bungy's leg was then bandaged with a thick supportive bandage to help provide stability in the first few weeks.

Bungy was placed on antibiotics to prevent infection, and pain killers.

His only problem now will be getting through the metal
detectors at the airport!!
