Pyometron

A pyometron is an infected uterus.  It is a life threatening condition and the only prevention is to desex your dog.

Mean age
Usually in animals over 6 years old
Usually diagnosed 1-12 weeks after oestus.
(Pyometron of uterine stump is rare-and can occur any time after ovariohysterectomy)

Physical examination and findings
The uterus may be palpabe
If the cervix is open, then a putrid vaginal discharge may be visable
If the cervix is closed, then signs of systemic illness will be seen
These include- lethergy, depression, anorexia, vomiting, drinking a lot of water and urinating lots.

Blood tests will often show an increased WBC count.  Often elevated liver enzymes if septicemia.

Your vet will most likely xray or ultrasound the abdomen to confirm a diagnosis of pyometra.

Treatment
With closed pyometron the only solution is surgical.  This involves removing the entire uterus and the pus within.

If left too long, the uterus can rupture and lead to peritonitis, septicaemia and death.
If the cervix is open, then alazin can be used to cause uterine contraction and expell the fetid contents.

In both situations the animal will require antibioitic therapy.
