Metritis

Metritis is an acute bacterial infection of the uterus that occurs post partum.

Symptoms
Affected animals are febrile (have a temperature) and have a septic uterine discharge.  Dehydration, septicemia, endotoxemia, shock or a combination of these can occur.

Diagnosis
History and physical findings.
Bacterial culture and sensitivity testing of discharge.
Abdominal radiography or ultrasound can be performed to evaluate uterine contents.

Treatment
Ovo-hysterectomy is the fastest, most effective treatment.
IVFT is really important.
Appropriate antibacterial treatment.

Prognosis
Excellent with ovohysterectomy.  Guarded with only antibiotic treatment.
